2007-10-28 Bulletin

We are God's Children—gathered by Him in love—to bring glory to the Triune God, to pray, to seek the lost, to nurture the young in the Lord, to care for the hurting, and to encourage one another.  We do this in obedience to His Word.

Discipleship Series

We have begun a five part sermon series on discipleship. It comes out of our 150th Anniversary celebrations where we rededicated ourselves to serving our Lord Jesus, following him as his disciples. The series includes a devotional book with daily readings. There are a few left. If you did not get one ask Pastor Mike. It also includes discussion times. These will be every Saturday evening from 7:30 – 9:00. We will go over the devotional readings and the sermons, answering any questions and encouraging each other as disciples of Christ. Everyone is welcome.

Church Family

Ruth Sluys has been getting weaker since the hole in her heart destroys her blood cells. She needs more regular blood transfusions and has had one the last few days. She cannot have any open heart surgeries anymore. This Tuesday she will have a consultation with the surgeon who may be able to use a special procedure thru a vein to possibly close the hole. Pray that decisions are made to try this procedure very soon and that the hole may be closed. Above all, pray for strength from our Lord and Savior since He will decide the outcome, always for our good of which both Ruth and Pastor Peter are convinced.

Remember our shut-ins: Tena Ellen, Ann Swier, Margaret Bos, Theresa Salomons, and Jackie Hartenhof.

Church Secretary

The church secretary position is still available. Please prayerfully consider becoming involved in the ministry of Bethel in this part-time role. Talk with Pastor Mike if you are interested in this position. Cindy Prins will be editing the bulletin for the month of October. Please continue to send written announcements by email to the church or place them in the folder on the desk in the secretary’s office or in the secretary’s mailbox.

There is a lovely cream colored jacket which has been residing on the back of a chair in the church library for the past few months. If this jacket is yours, please pick it up soon from the library!

Tuesday Night Youth

The following Saturday November 3 we will meet at Bethel at 2:30 so we can then join the other churches involved and pick up our food donations.

Bible Studies:

Because of the Discipleship series and Bible studies that Pastor Mike is leading on Saturday evenings the two Bible studies we were going to start this fall will begin once the Discipleship series is finished. One group will be studying the DVD “Love and Respect.” This study will be headed by Terry and Donna Vandenborn. For any that are still interested in joining this study, give them a phone call.

The second group will be studying “The Truth Project” put on by Focus on the Family. This DVD series is not available until the end of November. For those interested in joining this group, please phone Peter and Jan Zuidhof.

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Gospel singer Helen Berhane (32), who was released from prison in November 2006 after being detained in Eritrea without charge for two years, has been granted asylum in Denmark. She and her daughter arrived in the country safely on October 19th. For the past eleven months, Berhane had been maintaining a low profile in Khartoum, Sudan, where she and her sister fled in December 2006. Berhane's health remains extremely poor due to the physical suffering she endured during her detention. She is currently unable to walk without assistance. During her detention she was held for extensive periods in shipping containers and tortured several times by authorities in an effort to force her to recant her faith. Praise God with us that this faithful servant of Christ has found refuge in a safe location! Pray that He will continue to protect and strengthen Helen, providing for her every need (Phil. 4:19). Ask God to give her wisdom and discernment so that she will continue His work (James 1:5). Pray for God's love and grace to abound in our Eritrean brothers and sisters who are suffering for Christ’s sake in prison.

Dear Congregation:

It’s that time of year when we as Gideons have opportunity to present Bibles to Grade 5 students in the Wolf Creek school division. We covet your prayers over the next few weeks as we prepare and present the student testaments to the children. Pray that the school classrooms will be open and the children excited to receive this free gift and pray that the gospel may change their lives.

Christmas at Sea

Yes, the Ministry to Seafarers’ preparation of Christmas at Sea comes early as it takes a lot of time to get ready for another successful event. And that’s where you come in. By supplying a gift (or sending us your cheque, clearly marked for Christmas at Sea), you can help share Christ’s love with those who work on cargo ships and are often far from home and family for months at a stretch. At Christmas time these small gifts we distribute help point to the true gift of Christmas, Jesus Christ, in whose name the gifts are presented.
