2008-01-20 Bulletin

Bethel CRC Mission Statement: We are God’s Children – gathered by Him in love – to bring glory to the Triune God, to pray, to seek the lost, to nurture the young in the Lord, to care for the hurting, and to encourage on another. We do this in obedience to His Word.

Our Church Family

This week we will remember Darran, Gayle, & Ethan Vreugdenhil in our prayers.

Curt & Amy Dowling were blessed with a baby boy this past week. Austin Carter weighed in at an even nine pounds. We give thanks to God for this miracle of new life.

Our condolences go out to the Spelt family as Marvin Wine passed away on Monday. He had been struggling with cancer for some time. He was 67 years old. The funeral was yesterday afternoon. May God comfort his wife Wilma and the family in the assurance of faith and eternal life.

Ruth Sluys’ heart procedure is on schedule so far: Tuesday morning at the University Hospital in Edmonton. Pray for her heart repair to succeed. God is all powerful and has the best in mind for us. His Name be praised!

Brian Jackson’s youngest sister, Sharon needs our prayers. She lives in New Brunswick and suffers from diabetes that she has had since she was four years old. Complications at this time are of a real concern. We seek God’s strength and healing in her life.

;

Do remember our seniors in prayer during the difficult cold winter months as well as our shut ins: Tena Ellen, Ann Swier, Margaret Bos, Theresa Salomons, and Jackie Hartenhof.

Remember our missionaries around the world.

Church mailboxes

Some new members have joined our fellowship and they have received

mail boxes in the foyer. Please double check the name on your mail box as it may have been moved to a different spot!

Do you have kids who like to scribble?

The church secretaries would like to get rid of some extra scrap paper that has been collecting over the last few months. If you would like some paper for scribbles or would like scrap for notepaper, lets us know so we can bundle it up for you.

The 2008 Christian Reformed Church Yearbook

will be available soon. All those who would like to order a copy, please talk to Cindy or Dana before January 28th.

Highlights from the Council meeting held Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

1. The spring meting of Classis Alberta North will be held on March 4th and 5th at The Kings University College. Classical credentials were filled in.

2. Council heard the testimony of 6 young people and welcomed them into full membership benefits and responsibilities of the Christian Reformed Church. The public profession of faith of Brittany Brander, Madelyn deRegt, Travis Ebens, Steven Szelekovszky, Kristen Van Stryland, and Darren Vreugdenhil will happen at a later date to be announced.

3. The following motion was adopted: "To change the nomination procedure to hand out nomination forms to the congregation showing what positions are required to be filled, who is retiring from council, who is remaining on council and who is presently ineligible for nomination due to recent service."

Office Bearer Nominations – 2008

Along with the information in the “Council Notes” it is Council’s desire to give the congregation more opportunity to prayerfully be involved in the nomination of office bearers in our church. All professing members will be asked to nominate gifted people.

Sometimes it is difficult to know who is eligible for nomination so the following details are made available to you now.

Needed, 3 Elders

those completing terms: Peter Rosendal, John van Gyssel, Bill Wildeboer

Needed, 2 Youth Elders

(those completing terms: Wayne Bouwman, Henry Stad)

Needed, 2 Deacons

(those completing terms: John Stol, Terry Vandenborn)

(Note: women are eligible to be nominated for deacon in our church.)

You should also be aware that all office bearers are given a minimum two-year break between terms of service. Those who are therefore unavailable for nomination at this time are: Henry Eisses, August Luymes, Paul Prins, Ed Stol, and Rod Venhuis.

Sometimes people are even a little unsure who the present Council Members are. They are: Henry Geldof, Peter Prins, Harry Van Stryland, Art Hazelhoff, Phil Tenbrinke, Rod Duckett, Ralph Bos, Peter Hoekstra, Herman Scholing Jr. so you cannot nominate them.

With this information you are asked to prayerfully consider persons you would like to nominate for these offices. You do not need to officially speak with each person you nominate. This is an initial general nomination of gifted people. The district elder will officially approach those who are ultimately nominated.

An actual nomination form will be given to you on Sunday, February 3rd (during the offering) and collected as you leave the sanctuary. At that time you fill in the names of those you feel are gifted to serve. Using your nominations Council will approach people and develop the official slate of nominees.

Those who cannot be present February 3rd can make other arrangements to submit their nominations. If you have questions please talk to Bill Wildeboer or Peter Rosendal.

Pre-Confession Class

Pastor Mike is beginning another pre-confession class for those interested in making public profession of their faith. If you feel you would like to take this step of faith at this time please contact Pastor Mike.

Bethel Newsletter:

Another month is flying by and the Newsletter team is busy putting together the next issue. A few families have received requests for write ups and a few more leadership teams or ministries will be asked for some communication about their work in the church. If you are one of these, please help us out. The purpose of the Newsletter is to inform one another in order to build up the family and the community here in Bethel. We hope to make each other aware of our joys and our concerns. The Newsletter is the place to get the information out about what your group is doing or planning so that the whole church can be informed and involved as much as possible. Are you making changes to policies? Let us know! Are you planning some special events with your groups? Again, write up a little something and let us know! By all means, you do not have to wait for invitations to write. Please email your write-ups if possible to ahgeldof@telus.net or to awildeboer@xplornet.com. Otherwise place it in the mailbox of anyone of the Newsletter team. Thanks so much. Laura Duckett, Anita Geldof, Harriet Luymes and Ann Wildeboer.

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Ethiopia

On the evening of January 12th a house of a Christian family was damaged by a bomb in the southeastern city of Jijiga. Terefe Feleke, his wife, and their two children, were in the house but none of them were seriously injured. While searching the compound, the police found another bomb set to explode a few hours later. Thank the Lord for keeping Terefe and his family safe from serious harm. Pray for Christians in Jijiga, where radical Muslim mobs have recently mounted several attacks against Christians in an attempt to drive them out of the region. Pray that they will to stand strong in their faith, and demonstrate Christ's love and prayers for their persecutors (Rev. 3:11; Matthew 5:43-48).

Employment opportunities

Please check the bulletin board for several employment opportunities with the Christian Labour Association of Canada and Citizens for Public Justice.

CRC in Kenya:

The CRC has called into action a special event response team to monitor the situation in Kenya, where civil disturbances broke out on December 31st upon claims that the presidential election of President Mwai Kibaki was rigged. Currently five CRWRC staff, one Partners Worldwide staff, and two CRWM missionaries are confined to their homes. A relief response is in development, and will begin with non-food items like temporary shelter, cooking pots, and blankets. To donate to this relief response, please mark your donations "Kenya Conflict" and mail to CRWRC, 3475 Mainway, PO Box 5070, STN LCD 1, Burlington, ON, L7R 3Y8. Donate by phone at 1-800-730-3490 or online at www.crwrc.org.

Youth Opportunity in Cuba:

The Cuba Connection Committee has received an invitation from the Iglesia Cristiana Reformada en Cuba to the youth of Classis Northern Alberta to participate in a summer youth camp in Cuba. THE WINTER OF OUR DISCONTENT:

“If I just had THAT, then I’d be happy.” Have you ever found yourself saying that exact phrase? Or maybe you’ve heard someone else say it and wondered how many things it would take for them to be happy. It seems to be a common, yet endless cycle in the Western world today. What is the secret to true contentment? Find out on the next Back to God Hour.
