2008-02-03 Bulletin

Bethel CRC Mission Statement: We are God’s Children – gathered by Him in love – to bring glory to the Triune God, to pray, to seek the lost, to nurture the young in the Lord, to care for the hurting, and to encourage on another. We do this in obedience to His Word.

Our Church Family

This week we remember Jake and Agnes Prins in our prayers.

Ruth Sluys was able to receive treatment for one of the holes in her heart. The doctors are considering how they can proceed to address the other heart issues. We are extremely grateful this initial procedure went well and trust for renewed strength and continued healing in the future. Ruth is presently staying at the Lacombe hospital for an indefinite amount of time while waiting for the next surgery. She is glad to receive visitors. Pastor Peter also has recovered from his ear surgery and is able to hear a little better, for which we are very thankful.

Afghanistan Mission

Canadian Forces – often it seems far removed from us but it is not. Three families in our fellowship are directly involved with the mission. Alberta and Carol De Waal have a granddaughter going there, Peter Rosendal, a brother, and Ernie and Willie Stebner, a grandson. We pray for safety for all those who serve in the Canadian Forces and God’s blessing on their efforts to bring peace to that troubled region.

Do remember our seniors in prayer during the difficult cold winter months as well as our shut ins: Tena Ellen, Ann Swier, Margaret Bos, Theresa Salomons, and Jackie Hartenhof.

Remember our missionaries around the world.

From Wilma Wine and family

Sincere thanks to the Bethel congregation for their prayers, concern and support during the lengthy illness and death of Mr. Marvin Wine.

We truly felt God’s comfort through your care and love.

Profession of Faith

Is planned for Sunday, February 17th in the morning service. Brittany Brander, Madelyn de Regt, Travis Ebens, Steven Szelekovszky and Kristin Van Stryland will publicly express their love for the Lord Jesus as their Savior. Darran Vreugdenhil will make his profession at a later date. On February 24th we will celebrate the Lord’s Supper together.

Office Bearer Nominations – 2008

It is Council’s desire to give the congregation more opportunity to prayerfully be involved in the nomination of office bearers in our church. Sometimes it is difficult to know who is eligible for nomination so the following details are made available to you.

SEEK PEACE IN AFGHANISTAN:

As Christians, we are called to be agents of peace in a war-torn world. We can live this calling while Canadians and Afghans work together to find a path to peace. The release of the Manley Report on Canada’s role in Afghanistan will lead to opportunities to exercise our responsibilities for peace and justice. For action ideas, and to learn about CRC peace perspectives visit www.crcna.org/ccg or contact the CRC’s Committee for Contact with the Government at 800.730.3490.

Christmas at Sea

A THANK YOU to everyone who helped make this past season’s Christmas at Sea project a huge success once again, I’d like to share just a couple of incidents from this year: A Greek captain of one of the ships to which we delivered gifts recalled how he’d been in the Port of Vancouver in 1992 during the Christmas season. Never, said he, had he received such gifts in any other port! On another ship, a Jewish (female) 3rd mate was so overcome with emotion at receiving a gift, she didn’t know how to thank me enough! Yes, the gifts you provided were extremely well received and appreciated. And as individuals supplied the gifts, and some lower mainland CRC youth groups helped with the wrapping of gifts purchased with the money donations received, businesses also did their part by collecting and transporting the boxes of gifts to the Mission in Vancouver for distribution. On behalf of the Ministry to Seafarers, THANK YOU one and all! Without your participation the Christmas season could have been much bleaker for many sailors.

Ernst Devries Ministry Chaplain

Central Alberta Pregnancy Centre

Our mission at the Central Alberta Pregnancy Centre is to offer support and education in a loving Christian environment to individuals and families impacted by pregnancy. We have a small staff and rely on our volunteers for much of the work; all our peer counselors and receptionists are trained volunteers and we like to offer this opportunity to more Christian people on our community. We offer volunteer training twice a year, our next training session is on February 19, 20, 21, 26, 27 and March 1st. If you would like more information please contact Anneloes van den Akker at 343-1611

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

INDIA

Seventy year old Pastor Abraham and several of his family members, were beaten by militants while preparing for a weekly prayer meeting on the morning of January 18th. At approximately 10:00 a.m., a group of local Hindus armed with rods and stones barged into Pastor Abraham's house and beat him, his wife and five children. When the pastor went to the police station for help, several other Christians arrived at his home to attend the scheduled meeting and were attacked by the militants. Several of the beaten believers were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Pray for healing for those injured in this attack. Pray that Christians in India will continue to give themselves fully to the work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:50-58).

THE BODY IS WEAK:

Jesus instructed his disciples to keep watch and pray, but they fell asleep. Likewise today, although our spirits may be ready and willing to serve Christ, we often fail. The Feb.10 Back to God Hour message confronts our weaknesses, but also awakens us to the grace and strength of Christ. Go to www.BacktoGod.net for local stations and times.
