2008-06-29 Bulletin

We are God's Children - gathered by Him in love - to bring glory to the Triune God, to pray, to seek the lost, to nurture the young in the Lord, to care for the hurting, and to encourage one another. We do this in obedience to His Word.

Prayer for the Persecuted Church

Pastor Zaur Balaev, who was released on March 19th after being imprisoned for nearly a year on accusations of holding "illegal meetings under the guise of religious activities" is facing new threats from authorities. In late May, Balaev was summoned to the office of a local police chief where three officers present made statements including, "'Haven't you learned from your imprisonment?" and "Wasn't one prison term enough for you?'" Balaev also said that one officer told him, in a clear threat, "You may not be afraid, but you've forgotten you've got a wife, daughter and a son." Although the officers were not violent to him, Balaev described them as "very crude." Balaev's church is reportedly under close watch by authorities. The police have banned the church from holding church services but the congregation has refused to stop meeting together for worship. Pastor Hamid Shabanov was arrested after police claimed to find an illegal weapon while searching his home in Aliabad on June 20th. Pastor Shabanov's family and congregation insist that police planted the gun they claimed to discover. Shabanov's brother sees the arrest as a direct attack on the pastor's Baptist church and an attempt to halt Christian activity in the area. Shabanov's home was among those searched when Pastor Zaur Balaev, was detained in May 2007. Pray that the truth of this situation will be made known and that Pastor Shabanov will be released and that Pastor Balaev and his family may be protected, being able to work for the Lord where He needs them. Pray that Christians in Azerbaijan will be emboldened to follow in their Savior's footsteps (1 Corinthians 4:9-14,16).

Our Beloved Land

Lord Jesus, our sovereign Lord and coming King,
we bow before You to pray for our country,
the land we love,
the land whose heritage has enriched us,
the land whose history and uniqueness
are cause for great thanksgiving.
Lord, increase Your work in this country
that those who exult in being part of it
may discover the greater joy and freedom of
membership in the family of God.
And remind us, Lord, that, in a sense,
we have a dual citizenship,
for as members of the church we are also citizens
of Your kingdom, which will one day supercede
all the nations of the earth
and make a perfect and peaceful
unity of all peoples.
