2009-05-31 May 31 Bulletin

We are God's Children - gathered by Him in love - to bring glory to the Triune God, to pray, to seek the lost, to nurture the young in the Lord, to care for the hurting, and to encourage one another. We do this in obedience to His Word.

Our Church Family

We are celebrating with our young people who are doing Profession of Faith today. We pray that they may continue to seek God's guidance in their daily walk as they reflect His will for their lives, so others may come to know Him too. The flowers will be presented to them as we praise God together here on this Sunday.

Congratulations to Ruth Sluys as she celebrates her 74th birthday this Wednesday. May God continue to bless you and your family as you celebrate together!

Willie Stebner remains in Red Deer hospital receiving care. We pray for the grace of our Lord to provide what she need through his riches in mercy.

Thank you all for your prayers, visits and cards while Herman was in the Red Deer Hospital.

Bethel Newsletter:

Another month has flown by and the newsletter team is working on the June issue. We are focusing on Fathers’ Day and Summer and are really hoping for some special contributions from the congregation. An introduction to your Dad maybe, or a description of your day on the job, or special memories of summer with your family or special holiday recipes. Share your stories with us and let's get to know one another better. You can email your contributions to any one on the Newsletter team: haraug@telus.net , awildeboer@xplornet.com , rlduck@platinum.ca or ahgeldof@telus.net . Or put it in the Newsletter mailbox in the foyer. Our deadline for accepting articles will be Monday, June 1st. Looking forward to another interesting edition!

November Mission trip to Mexico:

An update on the church building project in Mexico. Today, May 31st, after the evening service Doug Fullerton will come with a 15 minute picture presentation on how the Mexican church is progressing since he was there at the beginning. Information will be made known on travel costs, cost of staying at the YWAM base in Ensenada and how much will be needed to put walls and a roof on the second floor of the church. This building mission will hopefully take place during the first two weeks of November. Our church has agreed to handle the donations towards this project. Any adult who is interested is invited to attend. Many hands make light work! See you all this evening. Your coordinator August Luymes is willing to answer any immediate questions.

Crash, Cash, and Carry

Krista Prins would like to invite you to attend the most spectacular event of the year... "Crash, Cash, and Carry."

Denomination News

Compelled by His Spirit: On this Pentecost Sunday, join with Christian Reformed World Missions in celebrating God’s global church, one of many faces, colours, languages, and cultures. With 80 percent of the world’s Christians living outside of North America and Europe, the Body of Christ is truly global. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, we can see God’s work being done as local believers and missionaries from many countries reach out with the Good News.

The Persecuted Church

In an attempt to silence an Iranian Christian human rights activist living in England, Iranian authorities detained his Muslim father. In February, Iranian authorities phoned Abdul Zahra Vashahi (62) and warned him that he would be arrested unless his son stopped his human rights activities. On May 14th, Abdul was arrested in the city of Bandar Mahshahr. Authorities interrogated him about his son, John Vashahi (30), a convert from Islam to Christianity who founded the Iranian Minorities Human Rights Organization. Abdul was released after six days. When John was asked whether he believes it was his faith or his work that led to his father's arrest, he said, "I think it's both, because part of my human rights activity is in regard to Christians in Iran, and we've been in touch with Christians and persecuted churches." Pray for continued strength and wisdom for John as he raises awareness and support for minorities in Iran. Pray that his father will come to know Christ as Lord. Pray for the Church in Iran; There is a growing openness to considering the claims of Christianity, especially among the young. Those who commit the crime of apostasy (leaving Islam for another religion) are often arrested and tried in court. Christians make up less than one-half of one percent of the population. The open witness of the Good News is banned and government spies monitor Christian groups. Believers are discriminated against in education, employment, and property ownership and also face arrests, imprisonment, and sometimes even death. Pray for strength for those who come to Christ despite the threats they may face.
