Our Church Family

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

We are thankful Tony Middag could return home to the lodge this week.

Albert Biel’s operation to repair his hip went well. We pray that he continues to make a good recovery in God’s grace.

Ray Merkus was admitted to hospital in Red Deer with heart and related complications. He is feeling better at this time and trusting in God’s gracious care day by day.

This weekend students and leaders are in Edmonton praising our God together at YC2011! We as Bethel leaders ask for your prayers as today we close a wonderful weekend of discovery. Pray that our Lord will equip each student in the coming days and weeks with what they stand in need of. May they live out what they have learned, in their homes, at school and in the community.

Do remember our seniors and shut ins in prayer: Tony & Henny Middag, Ann Vander Wal,

Tilly Biel and Lea Dykstra

Remember our missionaries around the world.

Summer Position

We are thankful that Veronica Bouwman is available to help at our church this summer. Her work will involve weekly service planning, volunteer coordination and preparing the power points. She will also assist with things like the Lacombe Days service, Parade float details, and setting up a prayer chain for our church. Our Federal Government Summer Student funding application was approved for this position so the actual cost of the position to our church is minimal.

Council Positions:

There will be a brief congregational meeting today after the morning service. This meeting will be to affirm the new office bearers. Two Elders, two Youth Elders, and two Deacons will be declared elected by affirmation. Those nominated for Youth Elder are: Andrew Tenbrinke and Rod Venhuis; nominated for Elder: Peter Rosendal and Donald Wildeboer; nominated for Deacon: Bindert de Jong and Rick Wildeboer. Any valid objections should be presented to the Chairman, Paul Prins or Clerk of Council, Donald Wildeboer. The installation service is planned for Pentecost Sunday, June 12th. The new office bearers will take up their work at the Full Council meeting on June 15th.

Today is CRWRC 2011 Embrace AIDS Sunday

Remember with hope those who are living with AIDS worldwide next week on CRWRC Embrace AIDS Sunday. By working through Christian partners and churches in 16 impoverished countries, CRWRC is helping to stop the spread of AIDS and ministering to those affected by it. Please give generously to the CRWRC Embrace AIDS offering.

Summer Preschool Sunday School.

June 5th will be the start of our summer program for Preschool Sunday School, so today will be the last Preschool Sunday School class for those children entering Grade 1 in the fall. A big thank you to those of you who volunteered to teach this summer.

Next Sunday, June 5th

We read the account of “Jesus’ Ascension” from Acts 1. In the evening we read from Matthew 24:1-28 as it describes “Signs of Jesus Second Coming.” Pastor Mike will lead our worship.

Bethel Safe Church Policy:

Starting next week we as a church community will start the process of a mass sign up for a police check. A couple of weeks ago in your mailboxes you received a copy of the policy and a volunteer profile form. You will still need to fill out a Lacombe Police Service Criminal Record Check form. You will receive this next week. You will also be required to leave a copy of your driver’s licence or any piece of photo id. All information will be compiled here at the church and when everyone has submitted all forms, I will then take all required paper work to the police station for processing. Please remember that this is of NO COST to you, just your time. I will be set up downstairs in the council and photo copy room for the whole month of June. Anyone involved with Council, Ministry Leadership Teams, Nursery, Youth leaders, GEMS, Cadets, Sunday School/Children in Worship, Coffee Break/Story Hour and Nursery, Friendship, Ushers and Hall Monitors and Circle of Friends are required to go through this process so that we as a church are covered in our insurance policies. If you have any questions about the process or the forms please contact me. Dana van Gyssel

June Bethel Newsletter:

Time to start thinking about the next newsletter. We hope many in the congregation take the time to think about what they would like to see in the newsletter. If you have a poem or story to contribute - by all means, let the team know. There were some suggestions in the last newsletter as to our theme for this month. Take a moment and re read Harriet's 'thinking ahead' piece. We hope to keep the newsletter interesting and informative for the whole congregation. Please have your contribution in to Harriet Luymes, Ann Wildeboer or Anita Geldof by today, May 29. We will have to start being a little stricter with our deadline as too many things are coming in the day before production and that causes some real difficulties for all. So, today, May 29 will be the deadline. Thanks so much. We look forward to hearing from you.

From the Outreach Ministry Leadership Team:

We are planning a community garage sale here on the church parking lot on Saturday, June 11th from 9-2. Families living around the church will be invited to take part. We will set up tables for them to use. In this way we can get to know our neighbors and connect with the families around us. Church members are also welcome to bring items they might want to sell. We will be advertising in the paper and the community. The youth will be assisting by selling snacks and lunch as a fund raiser for their Mexico Mission work. We are looking forward to an exciting day. Questions contact Liz Stad 403-782-3444.

Church Potluck!

Our last potluck lunch was a hit! (We’ve worked out some of the kinks, e.g. long lines and hungry kids!) We are having another one on June 12th, after the morning worship service/coffee. Please bring some food to share and join us for a delicious meal and wonderful fellowship! For more information, talk to Debby van Iperen.

The Persecuted Church

Colombian Christians are on high alert as intense and deadly violence continues in the country. On May 12th, a bomb exploded in Puerto Lleras, killing several policemen and injuring bystanders. For several months, members of Colombia's main Marxist rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), have been openly killing individuals in town streets and burning buses throughout the region. FARC guerrillas have also been conducting an internal purge, reportedly killing many of their own men and accusing them of being traitors to the communist cause. It is suspected that many of those killed were secret Christians. "In all our years in Colombia, we have never seen it this unstable," said a VOM contact. "Yet we believe that this is also the most opportune time that we have ever seen for the gospel." Pray for those working to supply Bibles to Colombian believers in this region, as the need is reportedly very great. Pray the various other ministry efforts of Christian workers in Colombia will be effective. Ask God to guide and sustain new believers as they serve Him in a climate of intense and ongoing violence. Pray those who persecute Christians in Colombia will repent and embrace Christ as Lord.
