The First Sunday of Advent

Our Church Family

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

Lea Dykstra remains in the Ponoka hospital. Her Alzheimer’s continues to deteriorate and the family is waiting to find a facility that can provide the increased care she needs.

We extend our condolences to Gerald and Nelly Keitel with the death of Nelly’s sister Martina Bruinsma in Stony Plain. May God comfort her husband Herman and the family in this time of sadness with the assurance of faith in Jesus Christ our Lord.

I wish to thank all of you who have helped me so very much with the moving activities last month. It was so wonderful that many of you women have cleaned the house so thoroughly. I might not have seen it yet, but I know of your energy and talents, specially under the leadership of Pauline Bos and Barb Vandyk. Also a warm hearted thank you to those of you who helped me get ready to move , sometimes a very complicated, messy and time absorbing thing. You too have put so much of yourself into it, almost as if you were the ones who moved. God bless you all!

Pastor Peter Sluys

Congratulations to Bill Noordhof as he celebrates his 82nd birthday today. May God bless you with a special day and in the coming year.

Do remember our seniors and shut ins in prayer: Tony & Henny Middag, Ann Vander Wal, Tilly Biel and Lea Dykstra.

Remember our missionaries around the world.

Bethel News

Next Sunday, December 4th

We continue our advent series reading from Ruth 2 and Luke 2:14 and see that “Under the Bethlehem Star there is Shalom.” We also have the privilege of celebrating the Lord’s Supper together.

In the evening we will have a service of remembrance. For many Christians Christmas is a painful time as they grieve the death of loved ones, or the loss of a dream, experience health or financial concerns, or deal with relationship difficulties. This service recognizes the brokenness of our lives that we feel at Christmas time. Pastor Mike will lead our worship.

Dutch Cheese

The Gems counselors are raising money to go to a convention next summer. To help with costs, we are selling Dutch cheese; mild, spiced, medium, or smoked. Cheese can be cut into a variety of pieces. Check your mailbox for an order form or contact Wannetta Brander at 403-782-2290 or Jeanne Ebens at 403-782-7872. Deadline for orders is TODAY! Orders will be ready for pick up at the church on Sunday, December 11th. Thanking you for your support.

December Bethel Newsletter

The months and weeks have flown by catching the newsletter team a little off guard this month. This week will be December 1st which means we will be producing our final newsletter of the year this week. This edition focuses of course on Christmas – the special meaning of our Saviour’s birth. There are many special things that go along with Christmas. If you have special stories or poems, recipes or traditions we would love to have you share with us. Maybe there is an Advent devotion book that you have found very special for your family. Or a family activity that your family especially enjoys. Why not share some of these special stories and memories with the congregation. Perhaps some others will be blessed by your experiences. We look forward to hearing from you. We apologize for short notice. We will have to have your contributions in our email boxes or the church newsletter box by Tuesday noon, November 29th. Why not take some time this afternoon to put it together. Thanks so much and blessings to all as we begin the Advent season. Harriet Luymes - haraug@gmail.com, Ann Wildeboer - awildeboer@xplornet.com, and Anita Geldof – ahgeldof@shaw.ca.

The Persecuted Church

Nigeria

A murderous, four-hour rampage in early November in the eastern region of northern Nigeria left 150 people dead -- at least 130 of them Christians. Ten church buildings were also bombed and hundreds of people are still missing after more than 200 members of an Islamic extremist sect stormed the Yobe state capital on November 4th. The attacks were motivated by anti-Christian sentiments. Witnesses say the terrorists asked Christians they met to recite the Islamic creed, and those who could not do so were instantly slaughtered. The day before the terrorist attack, another armed Muslim gang killed two Nigerian mothers and injured 12 others including an eight-year-old boy in a raid in Kaduna state. The following night, the gang went on to attack a Christian village in the same area killing another Christian and injuring one other. Please pray that those who are beating and killing Christians in northern Nigeria will see their sin and will turn to Jesus and repent. Pray that the Lord will protect Christians in the region and that the families of those murdered will find peace and comfort in Him.

From CRWRC:

Sign up for FREE Advent devotions by email! - This Christmas, CRC justice workers from around the world are joining together to write daily devotions for Advent that focus on “Greater Love.” We will challenge each other to ponder God’s call to love each other and “the others.” We will also focus on issues of biblical justice and some stories of injustice. Some days we will simply consider God’s love. We pray that each day you will be filled with love as you prepare your heart to celebrate Jesus' birth this Christmas!
