Bethel News

Our SonWest Roundup VBS is this week!

A huge thanks to everybody who has committed to helping out and making the program possible! For anybody who hasn’t volunteered, but would like to help out, even just for one morning, feel free to drop in any day next week and we’ll find a place for you to help out! For baking donations, it would be great if the goodies could be dropped off in the kitchen today, Monday or Tuesday morning before the program starts.

There are pre-registration forms still available on the table in the foyer. Once they're filled in, these forms can be returned to the Summer Ministry Coordinator mailbox, or given to Evan. If you don't get a chance to pre-register, you can register on the opening morning of VBS.

The River Community Church Edmonton 10 Year celebration!

Ten years ago this September, the doors of The River opened for the very first time. A small group of people believed that God could do incredibly more than they asked or imagined. And he did! God has blessed us with: A growing River family, a world transforming Social Justice Network, and a thriving church plant and 2 more on the way. On September 27th, it’s time to thank God for his faithfulness over the years. We will also celebrate Mosaic House’s 5th anniversary and get updated on the 2 new church plants. The celebration starts at 5:30 PM at The Blatchford Air Hanger in Fort Edmonton Park. Everyone is invited to an evening of celebration. There will be a formal dinner, music, worship, special guests, comedy and much more. Tickets are $40 for adults; $25 for children until August 15th. So get your tickets early!

CRC Disaster Response in High River Alberta

Disaster Response Services (DRS) of World Renew is at work in High River. Various DRS Regional Managers for Western Canada were part of the Provincial discussions on how relief agencies could assist in the response and recovery effort. They also attended High River City Council to assess the possibility of DRS setting up assessment and reconstruction teams. The plan is to establish a long term local recovery office that assesses and prioritizes needs. All DRS work is done by volunteers, with material resources being supplied by various levels of government, relief agencies, and donations. The High River CRC had the basement social hall flood to a level of eight feet but the sanctuary is ok. Around the corner from the church is the parsonage. Rev. Droogers lost much of his ministerial material when water inundated his basement office as well. The water has been pumped out and both buildings are on track to be repaired. Thankfully both buildings are covered by insurance.

PURSECUTED CHURCH

Eritrea:

Eritrean authorities are punishing 39 high school students for their Christian faith, excluding them from a graduation ceremony and subjecting them to beatings and hard labour. After completing a four-month military training required in Eritrea, the students (including 11 girls) have been arrested for their "Christian beliefs and for their commitment to Christ." They are now enduring beatings, forced hard labour and insufficient food and water at the SAWA military training centre. Authorities are also threatening the students with long imprisonment and exclusion from university should they fail to renounce Christ. The prisoners are held in shipping containers in desert camps, with some kept in underground cells. May the God of justice swiftly come to the defense and rescue these victimized believers who desperately need His intervention and that He would also make the reality of His presence and conviction known to those who are inflicting the persecution, before it's too late.
