2014-04-06 April 6 Bulletin

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

We offer our sincere Christian condolences to Hans Spelt and his family and Gerrit and Dorothy Meindersma and the family with the death of Grace Spelt. She was 70 years old. She had been suffering from Alzheimer’s for many years and died peacefully with her loved ones by her side. The funeral took place this past Thursday. May God comfort the family in this time of sadness.

We are very thankful that Mrs. Lena Spelt recovered well from some mild stroke symptoms and was able to return to her room at the Royal Oak Manor this week.

Congratulations to Gerrit Meindersma with the celebration of his birthday tomorrow, and to Teus Vander Vlis with the celebration of his birthday this coming Thursday. May God bless you both on your special days and in the year to come.

A number of our church families are traveling in Israel this week. We pray for traveling mercies and profound times of spiritual growth as they visit many of the places mentioned in the Bible.

We want to keep our summer seminary student, Charles Van Hoffen in our prayers. He is finishing his 2nd year of seminary at the end of May and will begin here at Bethel on June 8th (Pentecost). His family is made up of his wife Heather and their two sons Ethan (10) and Seth (7). The Van Hoffens are from Southern Ontario, the Grimsby area, where Charles worked as a Residential Counselor for people with disabilities and an Elementary Christian School teacher. From there God called him into pastoral ministry and he looks forward to being a part of our church community for the summer internship.

Do remember our seniors and shut ins Albert & Tilly Biel, Klaas Boskers, Lea Dykstra, Tony Middag, Lena Spelt, Ernie Stebner and Grace Vander Veen in prayer.

Pray for our missionaries around the world.

Sawan Masih, a Christian road sweeper and father of three from Lahore, was sentenced to death for blasphemy on March 27th. His sentence is based on a conversation between him and his Muslim friend in March 2013. Two days later more than 3,000 Muslims pillaged Sawan's community, looting and torching Christian homes, shops and churches, and displacing hundreds of families. An appeal is being filed with the Lahore High Court, which must sign off on death penalty cases. Meanwhile, the latest hearing in the appeal of Asia Bibi against her death sentence for blasphemy took place on March 26th. It lasted just 10 minutes due to the failure of the prosecution lawyer to attend. The next hearing has been scheduled for April 14th. Asia Bibi is the first woman in the country to be sentenced to death for blasphemy. Ask God for wisdom and favour to both legal teams as they face the judicial authorities in Pakistan. Pray that both families will be strong and courageous, resting in God's promise that He will neither leave nor forsake them (Deuteronomy 31:6). May their appeals be successful, so that they may soon be released from prison. Pray that Sawan and Asia will serve as bold testimonies of God's goodness, leading many to faith in Jesus.
