2014-06-01 June 1 Bulletin

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

The person of the week is Els Ebens. Els suffered a heart attack last weekend. She was admitted to Red Deer Hospital and is being assessed and stabilized. She is resting comfortably in the knowledge of God’s love for her. Please keep her in your daily prayers.

Lillian Mercier remains in the Lacombe hospital as her blood sugars are still not where they should be. We pray for patience for her in this time.

Dana van Gyssel’s father, Ed Moller was operated on to remove his foot due to complications from diabetes. He is doing well and remains in hospital receiving physiotherapy. We entrust him and the family to God’s gracious care.

Thank you, Bethel ladies for all the generous gifts you all gave Adam and myself. It is such a blessing to have so much support here in Lacombe. We along with our parents would like to invite you to celebrate our marriage with us at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 7th here at Bethel church. Thank you all again, Heather Noordhof and Adam Eisses.

We wanted to say THANK YOU to all of you for your support through family, friends, and our church family. We enjoyed the MS walk/run last Sunday at Great Chief Park in Red Deer, with beautiful weather, together with family and friends and many others fighting MS. Our “Team Swier” raised over $10,000 towards finding a cure for MS!!! Please continue to pray for strength for Roger as it seems his legs are more fatigued and it is difficult to do many things. We feel blessed to have our church family! Roger & Anita Swier

Do remember our seniors and shut ins Albert & Tilly Biel, Klaas Boskers, Lea Dykstra, Lena Spelt, Ernie Stebner and Grace Vander Veen in prayer.

Pray for our missionaries around the world.

Note from Pastor Mike:

My sabbatical begins tomorrow, June 2nd and extends through to the last week of August. I will preach again August 31st. I am officiating at Kendra and Bennett’s wedding on June 14th. I have already begun the course on Henri Nouwen and find it very challenging and insightful. You can access my blog at mvandyk9.wordpress.com to follow along with some of the key themes of spiritual formation.

While Pastor Mike is away you can contact your district Elder if any needs arise. As well, our summer student pastor Charles Van Hoffen is here to assist you. He is using the church office so you can reach him at 403-782-5050 or leave a message.

Note about the Van Hoffens

Charles and Heather and the boys will be driving from Grand Rapids this week. They hope to arrive on Friday June 6th in Lacombe at the Lewins. We pray for traveling mercies as they make their way west.

Welcome Charles & Heather!

As a way of welcoming Charles & Heather Van Hoffen to our church family, we invite you to help fill their pantry and fridge/freezer! Food items can be brought to church today, June 1st. Coolers and boxes will be in the church Fellowship hall to place your food items in. If you have any questions, please contact Marcella Van Stryland (403-784-3545), Ann Wildeboer (403-782-2061), or Erin Lewin (403-789-7995). Thank You!

To continue with the welcoming of Charles & Heather, a soup and bun potluck will be held after the morning service next Sunday, June 8th. Please bring a pan of soup or a dozen prepared buns and dessert. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

From the General Administration Leadership team:

Margaret Roolker will be the new church janitor starting tomorrow, June 2nd. Our former janitors, Marsha Span and Rob & Julie Span have decided to move on with other things. We are very thankful for their faithful service to us as a congregation and the wonderful care they gave to our church facilities over the last few years.

We are looking for more PowerPoint operators

to help during our Worship services. If you are going into Grade 9 this coming fall or you are older and would like to help out, please give Cindy Prins a call at 403-748-2824 or email to bchurch2@telus.net

From the Coffee Break group:

Something to consider over the summer months is this request from Coffee Break. After many faithful years of helping, Audrey Noordhof has asked to be replaced as nursery help. If you are available on Wednesday mornings this could be the place for you. Contact Jan Zuidhof, Margaret Roolker or Martha Warner.

Central Alberta Neighbourhood Life update:

We are now in the heart of block parties. We hosted one already. We built birdhouses. Most people want to ask how many showed. The answer: six households were represented; just over 20 (ages 3-70). But the more interesting thing that happened was when I put up the signs. That's when I saw 'Adam', up early, doing yard work. I was prompted to go a little further down the road to say "Hi." After two minutes of small talk, he told me he was trying to catch up on yard work because his mother died last week, and he just flew back from the funeral last night. One tear rolled down his cheek, and then I understood why it is important to plan for interruptions. I heard him talk, and saw God work. There are many open doors that come from block parties when we keep alert to our neighbours’ actions and stories. But doors also open just by walking down the road a little further to see where God is working in your neighbourhood. Three things to consider: (1) Walk your neighbourhood in a listening posture, (2) Join a block party or host one, or (3) Listen to three authors speak about neighbourhood, missions and discipleship (and their book, "The New Parish") in Edmonton, June 5th, at the Alberta Avenue Community Hall, 9210-118 avenue (7-9:30 pm). Contact me for more info at rickabma@gmail.com.

Classis Report:

Classis accepted the request of First CRC Edmonton and Pastor Michael Van Boom to end his term of service there. After a lengthy interview and discussion, Kirk MacNeil’s request to be declared eligible for a call in the Christian Reformed Church was not approved. Anyone interested in the work of Classis Alberta North can access meeting agendas and minutes on the website at www.classisalbertanorth.org and click on documents.

Slow Pitch FUNdraiser

June is fast approaching and we are getting ready for the first annual Slow Pitch FUNdraiser to be held on June 14th in Olds, AB. We still have space for a few more teams and we would greatly appreciate your support in promoting this fun event to your congregation once more. Please view the poster on the bulletin board for more details about the day and how to register a team of 12 players.

Saeed Abedini, an American pastor, was brutally attacked by officials and forcibly returned to prison on May 20th. The pastor was at a hospital during the time of the assault, where he had been receiving care since mid-March. A group of intelligence officials arrived at the hospital unannounced and beat and shocked the pastor before returning him to prison. Pastor Saeed has been in detention since September of 2012. He was later convicted on charges relating to anti-state activities and sentenced to eight years in prison. However, Christians assert that his charges are actually due to his involvement with house churches. Please continue to uphold Pastor Saeed. Pray that Iran's authorities will allow the pastor to receive medical care, and protect him against further assaults. Please also pray for his wife, Naghmeh, and their two young children, who remain in the United States. Pray that Pastor Saeed, and other Christians who have been imprisoned for their faith in Iran, will be released.
