Bethel News

Next Sunday, June 26th

We begin our summer series on the Letter of James “A Word to the Wise.” We will read from James 1:1-18 as it speaks about “Thriving in Trials.” We will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper together. Pastor Mike will lead our worship.

Full Council Notes from June 15th:

Pastor Mike opened the meeting with a welcome to all council members especially the new incoming office-bearers Trudy Salomons, Kyle Van Stryland, Rick Wildeboer and Brian Noordhof.

Discussion was held on the Church Renewal Lab of which Bethel will be a part of. This lab is a calling of churches to be more missional as a community.

Covenant for Office Bearers was read, agreed upon and signed by all Office bearers.

Confidentiality Statement was likewise read and accepted by all office bearers.

New executive was elected by council. Chair - Craig Van Stryland, Vice Chair - Wayne Bouwman, General Adjunct - Terry Vandenborn, Treasurer - Ed Stol and Trudy Salomons – Clerk.

After consultation by those most directly impacted it was decided that the worship service time will remain as is at 10:30 a.m.

It was noted that more help is needed for VBS on July 25-29. If you are able to help please contact Erin Lewin.

Retiring office bearers gave parting words of encouragement and challenge to the body as we move forward at Bethel. Bethel thanks these retiring members for their faithful loving service to this congregation.

The “Church Renewal Lab”

is offered by Calvin Seminary as a two year ministry process that helps a church be renewed in the ministry to which God has called it. This week Council agreed to become part of the “Renewal Lab” group of churches here in Classis Alberta North. The other churches taking part are: First Red Deer, Rimbey, First Edmonton, Bethel Edmonton, and Stoney Plain CRC.

The strengths of the “Church Renewal Lab” process are:

- It is led by experts from Calvin in an ongoing coaching roll so that aspects of renewal are both taught and implemented.

- It is as a group of churches so they can encourage each other while each individual church still charts its own path by the Spirit’s leading.

- The lab simultaneously teaches about renewal, while also giving tasks to work on.

- It moves from the core team to the whole congregation in engaging the call to ministry.

At this time we need to establish the core team for Bethel to lead in the renewal process. We need eight people representing various church ministries. Core team members’ responsibilities would be: a monthly meeting and one training day (Saturday) every 3 months (Sept, Feb, May) with Calvin trainers and the core teams from the other participating churches. One of the first tasks of the core team will be to read two books “Leading Change” by John Kotter, and “From Embers to a Flame” by Harry L. Reeder. So far we have the following core team members from Council: Pastor Mike, Chairman Craig Van Stryland, Elder Henry Eisses, and Youth Elder Wayne Bouwman. If you would be interested in being part of the core team please let Pastor Mike or Craig know. For more information please check the Church Renewal Website www.calvinseminary.edu/the-renewal-lab

Bethel VBS!

Calling all kids -- put July 25-29 on your parents’ calendar, 9 to 11:30 a.m., and come out for VBS! Explore ancient Egypt with us as we hear about Joseph's story from the man himself, try out Egyptian food and games, and have fun making Egyptian crafts in the marketplace. It'll be a week you won't want to miss. Have your parents pre-register you by visiting www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/hl/LacombeVBS. See you there!

We still need more adult/teen helpers to make VBS happen this summer. If you're around for the week of July 25 - 29 and want to spend a few fun hours in the morning impacting kids for Christ, talk with Erin! We need 5 more family leaders (take the kids around to all the stations in groups of 10 or less), at least one more marketplace vendor, and a Celebration Leader. It's going to be an amazing week, so don't miss the fun! Please call Erin at 403-789-7995.

VBS is in need of some supplies that you might have.

Look around your house, and if you have some of these items to spare for a week please give Erin a call (403-789-7995), or bring them to the church and add them to the Sunday School room with a VBS label on the door. The things we need include:

-Farmer Market-type tent structures (for the marketplace) -- 2 or 3

-throw pillows for kids to sit on

-2 kiddie pools (the round plastic ones) or a galvanized metal tub of the same size

-baskets of any size to use for decorating and storage

-colorful blankets -- 8 for family groups, more for extra decoration

-old towels for cleaning up after brickmaking

-old shirts to protect clothes during brickmaking

-5 ropes or lassoes

-5 burlap sacks

-kid-friendly pets/animals for an "animal courtyard" Wed-Fri to be picked up daily and returned to you every lunchtime (ducks, donkey, cat, dog, birds, whatever animal we could put in a small petting zoo)

-Items that can't be returned include:

straw for brickmaking -- a quarter of a square bale

one Bobcat bucket of good mud-making dirt for brickmaking

We'll have another list of food items closer to VBS. Thanks for looking around to see if you have any of these items to spare to make VBS that much better and more fun!

There will be a VBS training night

on Wednesday, June 29th here at Bethel at 7:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend, please talk with Erin so we can set up an alternative time.

A 24-year-old Christian named Methodus Chimaije Emmanuel was killed by a mob of militants in Nigeria after being accused of posting a blasphemous statement about the prophet Mohammed on Facebook. The killing was part of a larger attack on Pandogari town in which three other people also tragically lost their lives and a church was burned down. The incident began with Facebook chats between a Muslim and a Christian. The Muslim youth mobilized other Muslims in the town on claims that the Christian youth had blasphemed the prophet; the militant group then burned down the Fellowship Baptist Church. Please pray for the people of Nigeria, and especially those who have been affected by the recent killings in Pandogari town. Pray for an end to the scourge of persecution which can only take place when Christians and Muslims fully extend the love and compassion of Jesus Christ in order to reside peaceably and harmoniously.
