OUR CHURCH FAMILY

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers, at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

Congratulations to Kyle and Erica Van Stryland with the birth of a baby boy last week Saturday. Little Tymen Kees and his mom are doing well. Together we give thanks to God for his blessing of new life.

Do remember those who are unable to worship regularly with us: please keep Jenny Bajema, Tilly Biel, Klaas Boskers, Gerry Doornenbal, Lea Dykstra, Ernie Stebner and Grace Vander Veen in your prayers.

Pray for our missionaries around the world.

The “Church Renewal Lab”

will begin in September here in Classis Alberta North. The other CRC churches taking part are: First Red Deer, Rimbey, First Edmonton, Bethel Edmonton, and Stoney Plain. The strengths of the “Church Renewal Lab” process are:

- leadership by experts from Calvin Seminary.

- group learning to encourage each other while each individual church still charts its own path.

- simultaneous teaching about renewal, while also giving tasks to work on.

- moving from the core team to the whole congregation in engaging the call to ministry.

At this time we need to establish the core team for Bethel. We need nine people representing various church ministries. Core team members’ responsibilities would be: a monthly meeting and one training day (Saturday) every 3 months (Sept, Feb, May) with Calvin trainers and the core teams from the other participating churches. One of the first tasks of the core team will be to read the book “From Embers to a Flame” by Harry L. Reeder. So far we have the following core team members: Pastor Mike, Craig Van Stryland, Henry Eisses, Wayne Bouwman, and Anita Geldof. If you would be interested in being part of the core team please let Pastor Mike or Craig know. For more information please check the Church Renewal Website www.calvinseminary.edu/the-renewal-lab

DENOMINATIONAL NEWS

We would like to invite you to gather with other CRC members, pastors, youth leaders, and parents for a conversation about caring for those connected to us and our congregations who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer on September 11th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Albert, CRC. Our prayer is that this event might be a safe place where we can listen to one another, to be encouraged by one another, and to gain new perspectives and insights from one another as disciples of Christ. If you have any questions about this event, please contact Ron deVries, Youth Ministry Consultant at canymc@gmail.com

PERSECUTED CHURCH

Pakistan

Asia Bibi and Imran Ghafur have waited for justice for more than seven years. Both are Christians in Pakistan facing life imprisonment for crimes against Islam. Authorities charged both Asia and Imran under Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws, and Asia was initially sentenced to death. In July 2015, the Pakistani Supreme Court overturned Asia’s death sentence and ordered a thorough review of the evidence. Currently, there has been no change in the status of her case. Imran was sentenced to life in prison, though he has appealed this sentence. Last November, a trial was delayed due to the illness of one of the attorneys. Court clerks told his family that a new court hearing would be scheduled, but they have not yet been notified of a new date. One thing that has made a difference for both Asia and Imran is to know that many people are concerned and praying for them. You can write a letter to encourage Asia Bibi and Imran Ghafur in their faith by using Prisoner Alert. Letters are also a vital reminder to authorities that believers around the world are concerned for both of these Christians.
