DENOMINATIONAL NEWS

WORLD RENEW - Partnering with the Bowden Institution:

The Bowden Institution is a medium security facility, which houses about 700 men. Last year, 300 of them (almost 1/2 of the prison population!) took part in the walk-a-thon to do something for people outside the fence. There is a steering committee of 20 men who have been running this under the leadership of the Chaplain Bud Sargent. In the past few years, the funds for the walk-a-thon has been coming in through the efforts of the prison's volunteer network. They have gone back to their family/friends/churches to solicit funds. Last year, they raised about $11,000.00! They are now inviting central Alberta churches to support their fundraising efforts. This year all the funds collected through the walk-a-thon are earmarked for World Renew's feeding program (through Canadian Foodgrains Bank) in Dugda, Ethiopia. The folks in the Bowden facility, and the folks at WORLD RENEW - CFGB are asking Reformed (CRC and other) churches in central Alberta to support this walk-a-thon by pledging a lump sum of money to the "Bowden Chapel Institution Walk-a-thon." Please read the brochure in your mailbox today to find out how you can support this effort and raise money for an organization we value!

PERSECUTED CHURCH

PAKISTAN:

Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian woman sentenced to death will fight for her freedom in court this October. Asia was convicted of blasphemy in 2010 after Muslim women told a cleric that she had made "derogatory remarks" about the prophet. Since her arrest in 2009, the international community has pressured Pakistan's government, calling for Asia's release and reforms to be made to the blasphemy laws. Although her appeal was scheduled for March 26th of this year, rising tensions and protests against it from Pakistan's Muslim community delayed the hearing until October. Ask that the Lord will grant favour to Asia and her legal representatives as they mediate for justice and mercy on her behalf. May the court be impartial and not be swayed by prejudicial arguments or protests, nor respond in fear to opposing militants. Pray for Asia's health and protection, as well as the safety of her family and all who are trying to assist her.
