Nomination for Council

It’s that time of year again to consider Council nominations. This year we require 2 deacons and 3 elders to be added as part of Council for the next three years.

Completing their terms this year are deacons Gord Bos and Cathy Dowling, and elders Henry Eisses, August Luymes and Craig Van Stryland.

Who is eligible for nomination? All office bearers are given a two year break between terms of service. Those who are therefore ineligible are: Cora Hoekstra, Brad Lewin, Jack Oudman and Ann Wildeboer. Women are eligible for the position of deacon. You do not need to speak with each person you nominate and you can nominate as many people as you feel are qualified. The district elders will officially approach people with the appropriate amount of nominations.

The present Council members are:

Gord Bos, Wayne Bouwman, Cathy Dowling, Marvin Ebens, Henry Eisses, August Luymes, Bryan Noordhof, Trudy Salomons, Ed Stol, Terry Vandenborn, Pastor Mike Vandyk, Craig Van Stryland, Kyle Van Stryland, Darran Vreugdenhil, and Rick Wildeboer.

A nomination form will be given to you on Sunday, February 26, 2017 and you are asked to take it home and prayerfully consider nominating those members you feel are gifted to serve as office bearers. These nomination sheets will be collected the following Sunday morning, March 5, 2017.

Those who cannot be present on March 5th can make arrangements to submit their nominations prior to the Council Executive meeting on March 8, 2017. If you have any questions, please contact Craig Van Stryland. In the weeks preceding the nomination we seek the Lord for His guidance in this process. Council deeply appreciates your prayerful consideration in this matter.

Lost & Found

The lost and found box at the bottom of the main stairs is very full! Clothes dishes, pillows, rubber & hiking boots are just a few of the lovely things to be found there. Please check it out, as everything that is left will go to the Building Blocks Thrift store at the end of February.

Welcome Home Hospitality Initiative:

Bethel Council and the Fellowship Ministry Leadership Team wish to introduce a hospitality initiative designed to welcome, draw in and enfold visitors and new members. In a nutshell: each Bethel household is being asked to take part by inviting a newcomer home for coffee and/or lunch after the service when the opportunity arises. In order to be prepared to extend hospitality, your name(s) will appear in the bulletin “duties” section the week prior to and the week of your service beside “Welcome Home”. You will be contacted by your elder in the near future for further clarification, but feel free to contact them first if you have any questions.

Czech Christian Petr Jasek was sentenced to life in prison after a court convicted him of "spying." Sudan officials took notice when he provided assistance to a student from Darfur who had been badly injured at a rally. His co-defendants were each sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison, mainly for helping Petr. All three believers plan to appeal immediately. Petr was also fined 100,000 Sudanese pounds (about $20,000 CAD) for doing mission aid work without a permit. The three men were convicted of "spreading rumours that undermine the authority of the state" and inciting hatred. The court ruling has shocked many. Persecution of Christians in Sudan is a valid concern. Many churches in Khartoum are currently under the threat of demolition. Churches presently facing demolition orders have to be represented by a lawyer appointed by the Sudanese authorities, not by the churches. May God's unfailing presence be experienced in wonderful ways by Petr as well as the concerned families. Intercede for the legal team representing the accused believers. Pray that the light and love of our Lord Jesus will continue to shine in Sudan through churches and the ministry of missionaries.
