July 19 Bulletin

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers, at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Continue to remember those young and old with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional struggles.

Congratulations to Jacob Prins as he celebrates his birthday this Tuesday. Wishing you a wonderful day filled with the Lord’s richest of blessings with family and friends. J

Do remember those who are unable to worship regularly with us: please keep Jenny Bajema, Klaas Boskers, Lea Dykstra and Ernie Stebner in your prayers.

Pray for our missionaries around the world.

Bethel News

Several of the Bethel Cadets and counselors

Are attending the 2017 International Cadet Camporee, taking place from July 12th to 19th near Custer, South Dakota in the Black Hills area. This year's camp is called Camp Elk Run. Please keep the Cadets & their leaders in your prayers as they gather together for this event and travel back home next week.

Vacation Bible School

Thank you to all who graciously donated or loaned items from the bulletin board list. VBS was a great success, in part due to your contributions. Any items that were loaned are waiting to be picked up downstairs, in Room #3 across from the council room.

Pastor Search Committee:

We are moving along nicely. We have explored the Pastor Profiles on the Search Committee Portal, whittling them down from 1300 to 100 to 25. It is an exciting process! Now we hope a number of them will be open to a call then we will go from there.

If any of you have a suggestion for a pastor you would like us to consider, please fill out a form on the back table and place it in Cora Hoekstra’s mailbox. Also if anyone would like to view our church profile, there is a link on our website. If you would like a hard copy, we have a few available, also on the back table.

Camp Rehoboth has started well this year, but we still need your help!

We are still in need of 20 volunteers for the week of July 15-21 and July 22-28. Please consider coming for a week of fun and friendship! If you want to take photos all week, we are looking for techies. (And if you want to watch movies all night, we need a night watch as well.) We have campers signed up and already packing, so we need volunteers badly! If you have thought about coming in the past, make this the year you come. We need you! Apply at www.rehoboth.ab.ca/camps today.

Opportunity for spiritual growth:

Spiritual growth often occurs when we are able to discuss our experiences of God with another person who is trained in reflective listening. This is the primary activity of spiritual direction. The Studion School for Spiritual Direction is now seeking participants to meet with our second-year students to engage in spiritual direction as part of each student’s supervised practicum. If this opportunity interests you, find out more by contacting Pastor Ron Klok: rev.klok@gmail.com

Volunteers needed for Pro-Life Events in Lacombe on Saturday July 29, 2017.

Another Flag Display!

Red Deer and District Pro-Life and WeNeedALaw/ARPA are organizing a Flag Display in Lacombe during Lacombe Days, along Hwy 2A, between Dairy Queen and McDonalds. This display of 10,000 blue and pink flags is to make people aware of the 100,000 abortions done in Canada every year and to help them realize that Canada needs Laws to protect pre-born children. Many people do not realize that Canada has NO law against killing unborn children until the day they are born. We will need about 20-25 students, youth, or adults to set up the flags from 8-9 a.m. and people to take them down at 4 p.m. We would like 4 people to remain with the display all during the day, working in 2-4 hour shifts, who are willing to hold signs, hand out leaflets of information and/or speak with people who pass by and ask about the display. All flags, signs, and information to help guide our discussions will be provided.

Float in the Parade!

We need some adults and lots of children who will be given birthday party hats, balloons, etc. as they pretend to have a birthday party on the float. The backdrop will be a baby's face with the words "LIFE is BEAUTIFUL" and the Theme "EVERYONE DESERVES A BIRTHDAY". If you can help out in any way there is a sign up sheet at the back table or please call Lisa Ellens at 403-885-2782 or text Val Beukema at 403-597-7244.

A third Mexican priest has been killed this year following a violent attack at his parish just outside Mexico City. Violence against the clergy is increasing and nothing concrete has been done to stop it. People are permanently exposed to crime, but especially the priesthood is becoming a dangerous ministry. In the past five years, 17 priests have been assassinated, two are still missing and two suffered attempted abduction. Violence related to organised crime is the most significant threat to Latin America’s Christians. Whenever a Christian starts to engage in social work – for example setting up a drug rehabilitation clinic or organising youth work, that is a direct threat to the activities and interests of organised crime because it takes the youth away from them, so it is a direct threat to their market. Christians are also targeted because of the perception that churches and their leaders have a lot of money, so congregations offer a ready source of cash – cartels can simply enter, lock the doors and ask the congregation to empty their pockets. The state’s indifference is simply encouraging the activities of criminal groups. Pray for Mexico, the people, the government and especially the Christians. May the Lord continue to encourage them in their convictions and may their conduct be a light in a dark place. Pray that the power of the Gospel penetrates the darkness in people’s lives and communities.
