UPCOMING SERVICES

Next Sunday, January 26th

We continue our exploration of the spiritual disciples by reflecting on John 13:1-17 the Discipline of Service. In the discipline of service, we will be exploring our attitudes towards service. Often, we are happy to serve in areas where we feel gifted or we enjoy, but what about service that is unseen or feels like it’s below us, what is your attitude towards service then? Serving is more about attitude than it is about what we actually do. We will also be celebrating the Lord’s Supper. As you prepare for the Lord’s Supper, reflect on who you place your faith in for life, where do you truly place your hope in, and whose love are you seeking?

OUR CHURCH FAMILY

Please remember our church family in your daily prayers, at mealtimes and during your personal devotions. Remember those who are unable to worship regularly with us: Jennie Bajema, Bill Wildeboer and Rena DeRuiter. Pray also for those who struggle in silence with ongoing physical, spiritual, and emotional issues. Continue to pray for our missionaries around the world.

Prayer: Please continue to pray for the people in your sphere of influence: co-workers, neighbours, and friends. Also our government, at all levels. Pray that the Lord's will, may be done. May many be brought to saving faith. We sang last Sunday, "Let my heart be changed, renewed, flowing from the grace I have found in You..." May that, be our prayer for each other and ourselves.

Bethel Newsletter:

February is approaching. February is the month of love but also family. We would love to have some stories from you about family. How do you grow your faith as a family? Is there a devotion book that your family has used that was a blessing and might be able to bless the next family? Do you have activities for developing strong family ties? Tell us your story. Would you be willing to share some of it with the rest of the Bethel family? These don’t have to be long pieces, just a short paragraph. If five families would share a paragraph, we would have a page of encouragement and celebration for families. Please think about what you might be able to share. Our deadline for receiving these will be Wednesday, January 29th. We hope to produce the newsletter on Friday the 31st. If you have any submissions, please note the Wednesday deadline. Thanks so much for helping us produce a newsletter that is informative, fun to read and a way of blessing the family. Your staff, Harriet Luymes and Anita Geldof.

The Bible

is the most important book we read and study as followers of Jesus, but it is not a book like any other, it is actually 66 different books written by many different authors over a long period of time, all gathered together to create what we call the Bible. These 66 books are written in different styles and genres and so it is helpful to learn the differences and what that means for how we understand what the different authors were getting at. Pastor Jake will be hosting a 7-week course on reading the Bible based on the book How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth 4th edition by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart so that we can learn how to read, and even interpret, the different genres of books found in the Bible. We will meet Sunday evenings at the church from 7:30-9ish beginning February 9th and going until March 22th or 29nd, depending on March break. You can purchase the book from Google Play, Kobo, Kindle and other e-readers, or you can order it from Amazon or Kennedy’s Parables. You can even download earlier editions as pdfs from online if you wish.

Food for Thought:

The Power of God's Love is great. We sing of it: "Let our hearts be changed, renewed....let our eyes be unveiled, let us see you, face to face....renew our minds, as Your will unfolds in our lives, in living every day by the Power of Your Love." Beautiful words! Are not the spiritual disciplines of prayer and reading and studying God's word a key element in realizing daily renewal and ability to live by His Power?
