Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony in their hearts. Those who do not believe in God have made him a liar by not believing in the testimony that God has given concerning his Son. And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

I used to wonder growing up why I couldn’t make God like me just by being good and trying my best. Why wasn’t my best good enough, is a question that would always sit in the back of my mind. It hit home to me years later when I was already a pastor; I was working on a sermon about this whole idea that our good isn’t good enough when I heard a commotion outside my study. A boy in the neighbourhood had fallen from his bike and skinned his knee and was screaming as loud as he could for his mom who couldn’t hear him because she was in her house. Being a nice guy, I got up, helped the boy up and got his home where his mom could take care of him. It’s then that it hit me, sure I was a nice guy helping that boy, but a big part of helping the boy was because his screaming bothered me and I simply wanted him quiet so I could work on the sermon. In being good, I was also being selfish. It’s no different if we try to earn our forgiveness, our motives are always touched with a certain amount of selfishness, reminding us that we need the pure love and motives of Jesus to take care of all our sin. Thank you Jesus!

Q. Why do you say that through faith alone you are righteous?

A. Not because I please God by the worthiness of my faith. It is because only Christ’s satisfaction, righteousness, and holiness make me righteous before God, and because I can accept this righteousness and make it mine in no other way than through faith.
