1 Thess. 4:3-8 A Beautiful Gift

posted Jun 5, 2020, 9:20 AM by Jacob Boer

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from fornication; that each one of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor, not with lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one wrong or exploit a brother or sister in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, just as we have already told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God did not call us to impurity but in holiness. Therefore whoever rejects this rejects not human authority but God, who also gives his Holy Spirit to you.

The seventh commandment is about honouring each other and the community because sexual relationships change us, it changes our relationships and we too often underestimate how much it changes us. Sex is a gift to bring two people together in a beautiful, intimate way, a way of joining bodies together as we join lives together in covenantal relationship of marriage. Sex makes us vulnerable to each other, creating a space where we can begin to share the deep desires of our hearts and lives. When we treat sex too lightly, focusing on our wants and rights instead of serving and blessing the other, hurt and brokenness twists this beautiful gift from God. God desires the best for us and gives us wonderful gifts to help us grow closer to each other and to him, but like any good gift it can be turned into a god, which has too often happened today. So treat this gift from God with the respect and honour it deserves.

Q. What does the seventh commandment teach us?

A. That God condemns all unchastity, and that therefore we should thoroughly detest it and live decent and chaste lives, within or outside of the holy state of marriage.
