Devotion for March 18

Psalm 19:1–6 (NIV)

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.

In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Every morning the news feels a bit more somber and serious. Our leaders are doing the best they can, but the best they can do is simply react to what is going on in the world, our constantly changing world. This morning, as I was walking my dog Bellah, I heard the birds singing, I saw the sun rising, and felt a cool breeze on my cheeks. In all these things I saw a God who is in control, who has set the universe in place and controls the movements of the planets, a God who will carry us through this time. With all that's happening, God shares with us the beauty he's placed in creation which brings us peace, revealing it to us in many different ways each day. So take a moment today to glance up into the sky and watch the sun run its course through the skies, this evening watch the stars come out one by one and cover the sky, notice how the moon gives out a calm and peaceful light over the land and then pray, “Thank you Lord for being in control, and for the beauty and peace you surround us with each day. Amen”
