Eph. 6:1-9 More than Just Obedience

posted Jun 3, 2020, 8:27 AM by Jacob Boer

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” —this is the first commandment with a promise: “so that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” And, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ; not only while being watched, and in order to please them, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. Render service with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not to men and women, knowing that whatever good we do, we will receive the same again from the Lord, whether we are slaves or free. And, masters, do the same to them. Stop threatening them, for you know that both of you have the same Master in heaven, and with him there is no partiality.”

This commandment is about healthy relationships. Ephesians takes this commandment past simple obedience and extends it to honouring, loving and being loyal to, not only our parents, but to everyone who has some type of authority and responsibility over us. Obedience can be done with a bad attitude and minimal effort, but God wants us to do more than the minimum, but to recognize that how we treat those that God has placed over us reflects how we treat God in our hearts. We practice our relationship with God with the people God puts into our lives here. Take a look at your relationships with your parents, your teachers, your bosses, your church council and ask yourself, “How do these relationships show the world the way I follow and love God?”

Q. What is God’s will for you in the fifth commandment?

A. That I honor, love, and be loyal to my father and mother and all those in authority over me; that I submit myself with proper obedience to all their good teaching and discipline; and also that I be patient with their failings—for through them God chooses to rule us.
