Matt. 16:19 We Have Keys?

“I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

This has always been one of those verses that puzzled me. How does the kingdom of heaven have keys and why would Jesus give us the keys to the kingdom since he knows the hearts of people better than we ever could? Keys open and close doors or gates, so the keys to the kingdom of heaven probably have the same use, so this is why Biblical scholars and theologians studied the Bible to figure out what these keys are and the Catechism tells us that the preaching of the holy gospel and Christian discipline are the keys that invite people into the kingdom and remind us that being in the kingdom is not just about privilege, but also responsibility, that by how we live and act, we show whether or not we really accept Jesus or even belong in the kingdom. We don’t want to talk about these things, but discipline comes out of love because we want our loved ones to truly be who God has created them to be, and sometimes this means they need to be held accountable for their actions. Hard, but makes sense, especially when you’re a parent.

Q. What are the keys of the kingdom?

A. The preaching of the holy gospel and Christian discipline toward repentance. Both of them open the kingdom of heaven to believers and close it to unbelievers.
