Q. What further benefit do we receive from Christ’s sacrifice and death on the cross?

A. By Christ’s power our old selves are crucified, put to death, and buried with him, so that the evil desires of the flesh may no longer rule us, but that instead we may offer ourselves as a sacrifice of gratitude to him.

At a time like this, on a weekend where we remember Jesus’ great sacrifice for us on the cross and we end with the joyous news of his resurrection, the question, why do we still have to die, comes up, since our sin is now paid for. Our death now is not about paying for our sin, but it brings an end to our sin. But there is so much more, Jesus’ death brings us new life, a new orientation on life directed to Jesus and the Way he taught and lived. Jesus brings us the Holy Spirit, God with us, who now lives in us, reminding us constantly of Jesus: who Jesus is as Son of God, our Redeemer, our older brother, our friend. This is all about relationship, because it’s through relationship that we’re changed, and this is what compels us to now offer our lives for Jesus’ will and desire rather than our own; the living sacrifice that Paul talks about in Romans 12.
