Q. What do you mean by saying, “Jesus ascended to heaven”?

A. That Christ, while his disciples watched, was taken up from the earth into heaven and remains there on our behalf until he comes again to judge the living and the dead.

Easter has just past and we now enter a 40-day period where Jesus spent time with his followers to finish preparing them to continue the work he had begun in calling people back to God the Father. This time ends with Jesus returning home to heaven so that he could send his Spirit to complete his preparation of his followers to bring the gospel news to the world.

This question, what does it mean that Jesus ascended into heaven, is a word of reassurance that Jesus that is alive and is coming back again. Jesus didn’t just disappear, but his followers saw him leave and this gave them the hope that as he left, so he will also return. It’s kind of like when our grandparents would leave after coming to visit, we would wave good-bye, and we knew we would miss them, but we also knew that they would come back again because they loved us and loved being with us. This is the same hope and confidence that we have in Jesus’ return.
