Q. How does Christ’s ascension to heaven benefit us?

A. First, he is our advocate in heaven in the presence of his Father.

Second, we have our own flesh in heaven as a sure pledge that Christ our head will also take us, his members, up to himself.

Third, he sends his Spirit to us on earth as a corresponding pledge. By the Spirit’s power we seek not earthly things but the things above, where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand.

I remember talking to a teen girl on a mission trip about Jesus and she asked me why Jesus didn’t just stay here instead of going back to heaven. In her mind, it made more sense for Jesus to stay than to go back to heaven. I will admit that there have been times I’ve thought the same way. It sure would be easier to prove Jesus is God if he stayed, and never died again, and he could show us through his miracles that he has God-power and is God.

Yet with Jesus in heaven, he sits by his Father and keeps pointing God’s eyes to us, telling God, “See, look at your children, even if they mess up, they’re trying really hard to be who you want them to be. Doesn’t it make your heart fill with love for them? We also know that because Jesus is in heaven, that when we die, we will also be taken into heaven to be with our Father and Jesus. Finally, we now have God in us through the Holy Spirit, so that even though Jesus is in heaven, God is in us through the Holy Spirit always reminding us to Jesus’ love and moving our hearts to love God in return.

I’ll admit, I still would like to see Jesus here, especially with his gift of healing with this whole virus thing going on, but the benefits of him going home are amazing too.
