Q. Is it significant that Jesus was “crucified” instead of dying some other way?

A. Yes. By this I am convinced that he shouldered the curse which lay on me, since death by crucifixion was cursed by God.

I was talking with a young man one Easter a number of years ago and he was angry that Jesus had to die for something he didn’t so, and that the way he died was so cruel and painful. I told him I was angry too that Jesus had to die that way, that Jesus had to die for something I did, but that I was angry at myself, not God. He looked at me and said that it’s not fair that Jesus had to die for something he didn’t do and I told him that grace isn’t fair, that’s why it’s so amazing.

He then asked why Jesus’ death had to be crucifixion and I took him to a passage in Deuteronomy where God said, “his corpse must not remain all night upon the tree; you shall bury him that same day, for anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse.” Sin is a curse that entered the world because we didn’t listen to God and we do our own thing, which is rebellion. The penalty was death and since it’s tied to a curse, Jesus went under God’s curse to take it away from us and onto himself. God’s grace comes at a huge cost to Jesus, which makes Good Friday so important. Thank you Jesus, for your amazing love for us!
