Q. Why did Christ have to suffer death?

A. Because God’s justice and truth require it: nothing else could pay for our sins except the death of the Son of God.

It’s Holy Week, the week in the Christian calendar that begins with Palm Sunday when Jesus comes riding into Jerusalem as a king, he is betrayed and crucified and then on it comes to a climax with Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday. Yet a lot of people hate the idea that Jesus had to die, especially that he died because of our sin. For them, God seems cruel and mean, why didn’t God just forgive us with Jesus’ death?

Jesus’ death happens because God had set the punishment for sin as death. If God changed his mind with the punishment, how could we trust him to stay true to his promises? The amazing thing about Jesus’ death is that he is God and, so as God, he takes our punishment on himself so that we can be confident in knowing that God’s promises of forgiveness, grace and new life are true and we can trust in them, literally with our lives.

Holy Week is God’s gift of love and grace to you; may you experience his love and grace today, and each day.
